Designing a major donor fundraising strategy for
Save the Children Italia

Who did we partner with?

Save the Children Italia was established at the end of 1998 and began activities in 1999. For over 100 years, Save the Children has been fighting to save children at risk and guarantee them a future. They work every day with passion, determination, and professionalism in Italy, and around the world, to give children the opportunity to grow up healthy, receive an education, and be protected.

What was the challenge?

Save the Children Italia was looking to double fundraising from their major donor programme in the following 3 years. Specifically, they were looking to expand the base of major donors with potential donations of $100K+. This included an assessment of current approaches towards major gifts contributors as well as exploration of new ways of engaging their Board.

What was our solution?

Upsall International initially provided Save the Children Italia with an assessment of their internal processes. This consisted in identifying existing barriers in the current infrastructure (staff, processes, tools, leadership, content, etc.). As a second step, we worked with the Major Gifts Team in a 2-day workshop to demonstrate the potential of giving growth from existing major donors in the current organisational context. The workshop included real case studies where we developed strategic donor journeys for a selection of donors with different profiles. Finally, we crafted key strategic recommendations for major giving based both on a top line analysis of comparator organisations in the Italian market and the development of ad hoc narrative for the top donor segment.

What was the result?

Save the Children Italia received a clear assessment of their internal processes, participated in a workshop that showed the potential for growth with their existing major donors, and came away with tailored strategic recommendations and donor narratives to expand their major donor base and strengthen Board engagement, ultimately setting them up to pursue their goal of significantly increasing major donor fundraising.
