Unlocking potential funding sources for World Ovarian Cancer Coalition

Who did we partner with?

World Ovarian Cancer Coalition (Coalition) is the only global non-profit focused solely on ovarian cancer. Bringing together a network of over 230 patient‑advocacy groups across more than 50 countries, the Coalition raises global awareness of ovarian cancer, advocates globally to influence policy, and develops evidence-led solutions so that all those effected by ovarian cancer can live stronger for longer.

What was the challenge?

The Coalition has achieved phenomenal progress since being established 2016. Primarily funded by corporate donors in the pharmaceutical sector, income has been volatile and fluctuating year to year.

The Coalition approached Upsall International to better understand how to sustain and grow existing income streams and diversify funding channels so that it can continue to grow more sustainably, and at scale.

What was our solution?

During an exploratory Coalition Board workshop, Upsall International consultants presented an analysis of available fundraising channels, a summary of global fundraising trends, and discussed the Coalition’s strategic fundraising opportunities.

Having identified trusts and foundations and high-net-worth individuals as presenting particular opportunities, the Coalition asked Upsall International to begin to explore funding opportunities across these income streams.

We began by conducting a comprehensive review of Coalition’s strategic plan to produce a prospect hypothesis on which to base our research. We then undertook a mapping exercise with senior leaders from the Coalition and its network members to identify opportunities for development followed by prospect research to identify a target list of potential donors.

For each potential donor, Upsall International developed a set of key insights including mission alignment and objectives, thematic and geographic areas of interest, examples of contribution size, and key information relating to the approach process including contact information.

What was the result?

The output was a detailed report a summary of the Coalition’s current fundraising situation.

In addition, the consultants went beyond the original brief and produced a draft fundraising strategic map and framework in order for the Coalition to develop workplans aligned to their strategic objectives.
