Who we are
Commons Seas has a longstanding connection to the ocean. We have seen plastic in every part of life on Earth: from the farthest ocean, to deep inside our bodies.
We work in partnerships with governments and businesses to design and deliver scalable solutions that tackle the source of the plastic problem. Our interconnected programmes are catalysing a cultural shift in how we make, use, and dispose of plastic.
What we offer
Common Seas offer the opportunity to be at the heart of efforts to deliver impact, scale, and meaningful change. You would be part of shaping a growing and ambitious organisation, benefitting from our support and commitment to your learning and career development. As we are growing rapidly, comfort with almost continuous change is vital, as is the desire to learn, improve, and grow with the organisation.
Scope of role
We are seeking our first ever Head of Fundraising, an entrepreneurial and ambitious fundraiser that will strategically support Common Seas with the future vision of the organisation. With a focus on trusts and foundations, major donors, and corporate sponsorship, the Head of Fundraising will have vision, oversight, and leadership to diversify our fundraising approach, both through leveraging existing connections and leads and through the identification and stewardship of new donor relationships. This is a great opportunity for an experienced fundraiser to develop, implement and continuously improve the organisation’s fundraising strategy to meet ambitious plans to scale reach and impact.
Primary responsibilities
The job holder will have the following key responsibilities:
- Successfully lead the development, execution, and monitoring of the funding strategy across trusts, foundations, corporate, and major donors to ensure a consolidated and diverse pipeline of funding opportunities to raise £1-2 M per year over the next three years.
- Develop strategic partnerships that ensure stable income growth and excellence in grant management.
- Ensure rigorous prospect identification, research, and network planning and develop clear stewardship and solicitation plans for key funding prospects.
- Design standards for private funding success, developing and monitoring metrics to measure and identify areas of success and opportunity.
- Produce strong and compelling fundraising materials for a wide range of channels and media, testing new methods and techniques for donor recruitment.
- Effective management, professional support, and personal development of team members who support fundraising, major donors, CEO, executive assistant etc.
- Be a key player in preparing the annual budget, tracking income and expenditure, and achieving the annual targets.
- Provide thought leadership on modalities such as donor advised funds, tenders, working in consortia.
The successful candidate will demonstrate alignment with Common Sea’s mission, values, and goals.
The following offers an aspirational view of our ideal candidate profile; however, we encourage applications from candidates with a wide range of experiences and backgrounds, especially those from underrepresented groups.
Essential technical competencies
- Proven expertise and experience of developing and delivering income growth across international markets, ideally in the European and North American markets and areas where Common Seas operations are established.
- Consolidated experience assessing fundraising performance across diverse income channels.
- Experience working in an international NGO or philanthropy environment, ideally in the environmental sector.
- Experience as a fundraising and grant management specialist with relevant and active connections and networks.
- Proposal writing and budget development experience coupled with strategic planning and management skills.
- Substantial experience cultivating donor and stakeholder relationships, recruitment and retention, and proactive lifecycle management.
- Strong experience in donor profiling, analysis, and interpretation of results/trends to inform strategy, including interrogating data and databases.
- Demonstrable experience raising and managing seven figure sums.
- Experience in setting up and supporting start-up fundraising operations and change management.
- Tech savvy with proven experience of database practices and application.
- Experience working for our blue planet with a deep knowledge of key issues.
