We work with a range of organisations, from grassroots CSOs to funders and movements, advancing social justice issues around the globe. We pride ourselves on giving proportionate and pragmatic recommendations that are tailored and relevant to our partners’ needs and grounded realities. We have worked with over 150 organisations to date and have ambitious plans for the coming year.
Purpose of role
We are seeking an exceptional Holistic Security Lead to join our team of risk and resilience specialists. In this role, you will lead the design and delivery of complex holistic security projects, help manage Kamara’s internal security processes, and provide strong line management to ensure the consistent delivery of high quality outputs across the team. This role will support parental leave cover for the Head of Kamara’s Risk and Resilience department and will work closely with them as well as Kamara’s Leadership Team. You will also play an external facing role, representing Kamara with partners and stakeholders.
Who we are looking for
We are looking for an experienced holistic security specialist who combines advanced technical knowledge and a track record of delivering support to a range of social justice actors, with exceptional cultural competency, communication, and line management skills. We are especially keen to hear from candidates with a deep understanding of how civil society organisations operate and an ability to analyse risks not only in terms of their immediate consequences but also their wider operational, reputational and strategic impact.
Primary responsibilities
The job holder will have the following key responsibilities:
Project delivery
- Oversee the design and delivery of complex holistic security support projects from proposal development through to implementation.
- Build and maintain trust-based relationships with partners.
- In partnership with leadership, review all risk project outputs for content and quality.
- Contribute to Kamara’s impact and internal learning processes.
- Represent Kamara in meetings with partners and clients as appropriate.
Internal security management
- Serve as Kamara’s lead for team travel security.
- Collaborate with Kamara’s Research Team on project risk assessments.
- Continually review Kamara’s security policy to make sure it reflects best practice.
Team and methodology development
- Provide excellent line management across Kamara’s risk team and project consultants, fostering an inclusive team culture that forefronts mentorship, peer learning and professional development.
- Provide constructive feedback to foster individual learning and quality consistency in delivery.
- Alongside Kamara’s Head of Risk and Resilience and Senior Holistic Security Specialist, continuously review Kamara’s risk offering and methodologies to ensure they remain current and incorporate emerging best practices.
Essential experience
- 8 - 10 years’ holistic security experience within the human rights and/or humanitarian or other sectors.
- Demonstrated experience in designing, developing and delivering holistic risk management support, including written risk assessments, security management plans and engaging, interactive training.
- Strong cultural awareness and interpersonal sensitivity, with the ability to adapt approaches effectively across diverse contexts, regions, and audiences.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex security concepts into clear, accessible recommendations for a range of partners.
- Proven experience in team leadership and line management, including the ability to support and develop high-performing teams.
- Ability and willingness to travel internationally and work flexibly across multiple time zones.
Desirable experience
- Professional fluency in Spanish is highly desirable.
- Experience working in high-risk and complex operating environments.
- Demonstrated experience leading internal security in an organisation.
- A strong understanding of organisational management, with the ability to contextualise in a broader operational and strategic framework.
- Additional working languages.
