Background
ICCROM is an intergovernmental organization working in service to its Member States to promote the conservation of all forms of cultural heritage in every region of the world.
For more than six decades, ICCROM has partnered with Member States to support them in safeguarding heritage within their borders and beyond. Working at the international and governmental levels, and with institutions and professionals on the ground, the organization engages and informs new generations of professionals and the general public with an interest in heritage.
Purpose of role
The Partnerships and Communications Unit ensures that main stakeholders, heritage professionals, partners, and specifically Member States, are engaged with ICCROM and the activities that are carried out.
The Partnerships Officer is responsible for developing and implementing a plan for strategic partnerships to secure the resources critical to delivering ICCROM’s ambitious strategic directions.
Key responsibilities
The Partnerships Officer will work in ICCROM’s Partnerships and Communications Unit and report to the Unit Manager. The post is based at ICCROM Headquarters in Rome, Italy. The Partnerships Officer will be responsible for the following duties:
1. Identify, cultivate, and work with existing and emerging institutional partners and donors (foundations, governmental, and private). This includes working in close collaboration with staff to build new and maximise existing relationships and identifying new opportunities to expand ICCROM’s service delivery and financial sustainability.
2. Develop and harmonise an effective network of financial, in-kind, and technical partnerships that ICCROM can leverage in support of our mission.
3. Manage ICCROM’s engagement with key existing and potential government and institutional partners, and position ICCROM as the ‘first port of call’ when funders consider capacity building and service delivery to protect and manage cultural heritage.
4. Design standards and benchmarks for institutional funding success, developing and monitoring metrics and criteria that identify areas of opportunity and outcomes.
5. Perform other duties as assigned consistent with the staff member’s background and experience and the needs of the Organization.
In collaboration with other colleagues, the Partnership Officer will also be responsible for the following additional duties:
- Work with the Partnerships and Communications Unit Manager to deliver towards ICCROM’s ambitious Programme of Activities and Budget, identifying and maximising key opportunities and messages to support and enhance relationships with stakeholders.
- Liaise with and support the Programmes Unit and Strategic Planning Unit colleagues to develop successful bids and proposals for strategic partnerships and project funding.
- Work closely with the Office of the Director-General and the Administration Unit to develop collaborations and partnerships with Member States that will contribute to ICCROM’s financial sustainability.
- Collaborate with the Regional Office on partnerships, messaging and relationship-building that will feed into the success of their activities and the Organization’s ‘One ICCROM’ approach.
- Education
- Advanced university degree in international relations, communication, or related areas; specialisation and/or experience related to marketing and fundraising for cultural heritage is an asset and highly desirable.
- Work experience
- Two years of relevant professional experience, with demonstrable success in cultivating securing relevant relationships with institutional donors, governments, technical and in-kind partners, foundations, and trusts.
- Skills and knowledge
- Deep understanding of the cultural heritage sector and its partner and donor landscape and an excellent understanding of international, geopolitical and policy decisions that affect heritage and its preservation. Technical knowledge of partnership and relationship management for a complex, international cause, with a range of varied programmes.
- Strong written, verbal, and digital communication skills for a cross-cultural audience, including representing the Organisation at events and in front of partners and donors.
- A genuine passion for cultural heritage and promoting its conservation.
- Languages
- English and French are the working languages of ICCROM. This position requires fluency in English. The knowledge of any other language is an added advantage (ideally French, Italian, Spanish, or Arabic).

Remuneration
This post offers an interesting remuneration package including relocation, visa sponsoring, education grant, housing allowance, health insurance and other UN benefits. Salary is at P1 level in UN international salary scale. The salary and the allowances are net of taxes but subject to various deductions, such as the employee’s portion for medical insurance and contribution to the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund.
